I will say I dont think this is for younger kids. This shoots with some force and the semi auto mode really delivers the darts at a good speed. Not cheap plastic, its durable and should survive a few drops. I would suggest this for older kids and teens. With the battery installed the gun is semiautomatic. One pull of the trigger releases one bullet which allows you to empty a magazine with in six trigger pulls. That's fun. However each dart needs it's own cartridge! So to have six seconds of fun you have to gather the scattered cartridges and darts, load each dart into it's own cartridge and then load the cartridges into a six round magazine, finally load the magazine into the gun and fire again.  Way to complicated. The long hallway gives it room to shine, and the rechargeable battery means no scrambling for AAs.
