The biggest drawback in my opinion is the location of the battery. They could easily have made a port to plug it in or really done anything else. Instead it has to be removed entirely and plugged in. In the meantime the toy can still be played with, albeit in manual mode, so that's at least a plus. It says for 14+ and certainly that is true for simply assembling it, which is not simple out of the box. But once playing with it, 7-8 year olds shouldn't have an issue with it. It does border on the \"more realistic\" side that nerf stays away from, so something to consider. Shoots as well as anything else similar, and semi-auto is fun, if not limited due to magazine size when you consider it's children with no trigger discipline. Overall the biggest detraction for me is the battery. It also appears to be a type I've never seen before. The grenade 3 shot blast is a fun way to hit moving targets. I would certainly recommend the product for how realistic the blaster shoots, with the ejecting shells. The only downside is the cleanup since the shells eject. But that's part of the charm. Wish it came with more shells, as the requirement to use them makes the play sessions a bit short. Especially with preloaded mags.
