The biggest drawback in my opinion is the location of the battery. They could easily have made a port to plug it in or really done anything else. Instead it has to be removed entirely and plugged in. In the meantime the toy can still be played with, albeit in manual mode, so that's at least a plus. It says for 14+ and certainly that is true for simply assembling it, which is not simple out of the box. But once playing with it, 7-8 year olds shouldn't have an issue with it. It does border on the \"more realistic\" side that nerf stays away from, so something to consider. Shoots as well as anything else similar, and semi-auto is fun, if not limited due to magazine size when you consider it's children with no trigger discipline. Overall the biggest detraction for me is the battery. It also appears to be a type I've never seen before. The grenade 3 shot blast is a fun way to hit moving targets. I would certainly recommend the product for how realistic the blaster shoots, with the ejecting shells. The only downside is the cleanup since the shells eject. But that's part of the charm. Wish it came with more shells, as the requirement to use them makes the play sessions a bit short. Especially with preloaded mags. The build quality is impressive and my kid loves the modularity of the blaster. He's set it up at least 5 different ways and it works great in every form. You do lose the semi automatic capability if you remove the longer barrel, since that's where the battery is stored, but he loves the options. This is my son's first blaster that uses shells and cut darts, so we were both surprised by the power this thing has. The two magazines is nice so he doesn't have to stop and reload as often. Although, once those are depleted, he can switch to the 3 dart launcher. You also get lot's of extra darts, which is nice since they are shorter than standard darts. Whether it's being used in manual mode or semi automatic, the blaster functions flawlessly. The design and battery of arms are similar to a real AR, which adds to the realism when playing. First, it comes with a battery pack.  So, it can shoot electronically or manually.  My son likes the option to shoot electronically to make it easier on him.  However, both work well.  Secondly, the gun has a safety built in.  We practice gun safety, even on play guns, so I think it is a great option to have.  Lastly, the toy gun can be assembled into many different shapes with or without attachments.  We don't typically buy too many nerf style guns, because our son tends to get bored with them fairly quickly and they all do pretty much the same thing. It's an AEB (automatic electronic blaster) which is a type of full auto blaster that uses a plunger rather than a flywheel, improving accuracy significantly and decreasing variability. The fire rate is pretty good, and it uses shells which means your darts won't get too deformed in the cartridge but you will need to clean up shells afterwards to reload it or put all the mess away. You'll want extra shells!
