It comes compact in a few pieces, but it snaps together in seconds and is ready to use. The reloading process is a bit tedius, you have to slide the darts into the shell casings, then load them into the magazine so it is a little bit time consuming between firing. It is a single shot, bolt action style rifle, not automatic or semi automatic. For those who dont know the difference, this means you have to pull the bolt back after each shot to eject the empty shell and load a new dart. This is designed for shooting at targets, not rapid fire nerf wars. The scope doesn't really magnify anything at all or have any kind of cross hair or red dot reticle, so it's basically just cosmetic. This is slightly disappointing considering the gun is geared towards target shooting and has surprisingly decent range. It comes with excellent illustrated instructions showing the user how to assemble and then shoot the gun (photo). There are a few minor errors in the English but nothing significant. Second, although it is only a small sticker on the gun, it has the most complete warning I have seen on any toy gun or its box (photo). It does not include trigger control (i.e., keep your finger outside of the trigger guard until ready to fire). It does say \u201cKeep the muzzle covered when not in use\u201d. Presumably, this is regarding muzzle control. It does include the warning to not brandish the gun. I have not evaluated a toy gun with bolt action and the bolt does work. Unfortunately, the gun jammed once or twice with every magazine of four \u201crounds\u201d of ammo (and I did read the instructions carefully) that I shot and clearing a jam was not easy. It certainly could lead to frustration for a young shooter; however, I suspect many young shooters would be pleased to simply \u201cdry fire\u201d the gun. It makes enough noise to feel like you are shooting which is not unlike many of the cap guns of my youth that did not shoot anything, they just had moving parts and made noise. Speaking of \u201cyoung\u201d, the box conservatively (in my opinion) recommends this toy for children of \u201cAge 14+\u201d. I suspect many children 14 years or older would not be interested in this gun. Finally, I noticed that there were two screws missing from the gun.
