It was a great togetherness project for him and his father to set up together and play with.  The controls handle nicely.  It allows for a slight change to the traditional set up if you want to try something different, but if he sticks with it, purchasing additional tracks and accessories would be nice.  I love that the toy demands time and effort to learn how to best run the cars.  It's challenging but rewarding.  I had a race track with my siblings when I was a kid, and we would play, and race each other for hours. (My cat loves it too.) I haven't owned a race track like this in decades so I was as excited as my daughter to unbox it and set it up. It seemed kind of expensive, but then again I didn't shop around....this was an impulse purchase....so I don't know where race tracks are at as far as price and features, etc. Based on my experience with many products, especially re-hashes of old-school types of toys, I was expecting to be underwhelmed by this, but gratefully this lived up to my somewhat over-inflated expectations. Putting the track together took some elbow grease but once together it held its own. This isn't the top quality race track of yester-years, but it does the job. I like that it has a plug and play option and not a rechargeable battery. It does have a battery pack in lieu of plugging it in but it takes 8 AA batteries so I'm staying clear of that. When I first used this, the cars went so fast they just flew off the track, but after tweaking it and experimenting with it, I was able to get it to work effectively. In order to not have it go crazy fast, you have to dial it down (explained in the instructions) and use the top button to control it. When I used the button on the side of the controller, it went crazy fast....but you could let off it to slow it down, which is a nuance my 3-year-old doesn't quite grasp. She held down the top button and it stayed on the track and she was elated watching it go around.
